Toyota Issues Recall for Nearly 400,000 Tundra and Sequoia Vehicles Over Rearview Camera Issue

Toyota Motor Corporation has announced a recall of approximately 381,000 of its vehicles in the United States, specifically 2022 and 2023 models of the Toyota Tundra and Sequoia. The recall has been issued due to a potential malfunction in the rearview camera system, which may fail to display the rear image as required when the vehicle is in reverse.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from the electrical connection between the vehicle’s wiring and the rearview camera. If the connection becomes loose or fails, the display may not show the camera image, which can significantly reduce rear visibility and increase the risk of a crash.

The recall affects certain Toyota Tundra (including hybrid versions) and Sequoia SUVs manufactured during the 2022 and 2023 model years. No injuries or accidents related to the issue have been reported at this time, Toyota said in a statement.

The malfunction violates federal vehicle safety standards, which require that rear visibility systems function properly to help drivers avoid obstacles and pedestrians while reversing.

Toyota says it will notify affected vehicle owners by mail starting in early November. Authorized dealers will inspect the camera wiring harness and replace it with an improved version at no cost to the customer, if necessary.

Customers can check if their vehicle is included in the recall by visiting Toyota’s official recall website or the NHTSA’s recall lookup tool, using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

This is not the first large-scale recall for Toyota in recent years, as the automaker continues to face growing scrutiny over vehicle safety and compliance with federal standards. However, the company has emphasized its commitment to resolving issues quickly and maintaining customer trust.

For now, Toyota advises owners of the affected models to remain cautious while reversing and to schedule a service appointment as soon as they receive notification.
